In my experience working with others I have learned many things about why we do or do not accomplish certain things in our lives. I sometimes wonder why many people don't work with a financial advisor or mentors of any nature more frequently and openly. I have found this to be an interesting topic, many are very open to it and search out people that have a more extensive knowledge to learn from while others stay stuck in a rut. I have also found a strange phenomenon which I believe is passed down from society in general. This phenomenon we will call "Money Talk". Society in general has created conversations regarding money, finances and prosperity to be some sort of taboo topic in which we should not openly discuss with our peers how we make money, how much money we make and what we do with that money. I have come to the conclusion this is either from people being ashamed of what they are currently doing with their finances, which is the best of all reasons to share with people who may have more knowledge in that area. Or the people who are to prideful or ignorant to admit they may not know everything about finances. I for one have been in this situation where I had thought I read the books, did the investments and was ignorant enough to believe that I knew what was available and was on the right track. I was only enlightened to my ignorance by someone who was looking from outside the problem who had experienced the same thing I was currently going through. It was a financial advisor that was recommended to me to go visit with, I was super skeptical and thought it would be a waste of my time so I put it off until I finally decided the most I could lose is one hour of my time. I sat down with this gentleman and he started to ask me many questions about what I liked to do, my family and even what cars I liked. All the while I was saying to myself get to the point I am here to learn about money! I look back know and wish I would have understood the only true assets are people. After he felt content he knew my background he asked me some very simple questions regarding my finances that pierced through my ignorance and pride.
His question was a simple as asking me why I was doing a certain mortgage, I stumbled when I went to reply to his question as I knew my answer would not suffice me nor him. I ran my answer through my head a few times and then proceed to lower my head as I spoke the words "My bank said it was what I should do, my parents said it was the best thing, I read it in money magazine". As I spoke this into existence I realized that I truly knew very little about why I made the financial decisions I had and that I actually understood very little about what I was doing contrary to what I thought less than an hour ago. My financial Advisor slowly explained to me why our banks tell us the things they do. Do you think the banks advice is the best thing for you or the bank? He then asked who do you think pays for the advertisements filling the pages of money magazine? What type advice do you think that magazine would write articles about the things that make you prosperous or their advertisers? He then asked me if my parents worked in the financial industry or are they experts in creating wealth. I replied they have done well but no. The reason I write this blog today is that you can learn a lot from the people right next door, if you only ask and listen. Look at Tiger Woods do you think he learned to golf by himself? Do you think he would be as great as he is without his Father and many coaches helping to point out his blind spots?
